This is your opportunity to join us for our hugely popular 'Summer School'.
Now in our third year, for 2026 the focus will be on 'Bringing Your Teaching of 'Shape' To Life'.
Teaching 'Shape' can feel like a comfortable area for many of us (often a welcome break from teaching 'Number'), and yet it's something we see a lot of confusion around:

How many sides does a circle have? (The answer isn't '1')

Will I confuse children if I talk about squares also being 'rectangles'? (Not if you give them the tools to understand why)

Do they really need to understand shapes at this age, isn't learning the shape names enough? (Are you aiming for them to think mathematically or just remember facts?)
Build Your Own Maths Subject Knowledge
Your can't teach something effectively until you understand it for yourself. Over these two weeks you'll build a professional 'tool box' of knowledge and skills leaving you excited about your teaching.
How to Plan for Hands-On Learning

I was once a 'Maths-Hater' and believed I could NEVER learn Maths well and certainly never enjoy learning it.
It was only when I discovered that it wasn't me or Maths that was the problem, it was simply the way I'd been taught.
When I discovered that Maths was NOT what I'd experienced at school and began to learn with understanding and application I began to LOVE it.
So much so that I made it my career and have never looked back (more than 20 years now!)

'We started off by looking at circles in art and asking the questions what do you notice?, what do you see? How do you see it? What is different and what is the same in the different pictures?
Wow bomb! I actually got what was in the children's heads and, was able to instantly deal with any misconceptions straight away.
We use Tapestry so they are also doing circle hunts at home and parents are posting these pictures ready for our learning next week.
I have taught the properties of a circle. What makes a circle a circle? I demonstrated this with the nail attached to a piece of wood and used string.
